Found this while using our bandsaw...

This lumber came from a 300+ year old Pine that blew over one winter a few years ago, we bought the tree from the Forest Service and milled it then. Yesterday we were resawing some 2x6 into 1x and we cut straight through this .22 caliber bullet.

thats really cool. think the discoloration is where the tree was damaged from the shot or something else?
        I don't own any guns...they're dangerous.

How far in was the bullet? I wonder how long ago the tree was shot. Way cool .

Looks like the tree also grew around it

The discoloration is a large pitch pocket that was around the bullet, most likely it gathered there while the tree was trying to seal the wound.

No way to know, the wood was milled a couple years ago so I have no idea what part of the tree that came from or how close to the outside it was although it had to have been at least an inch or more from the inner layer of bark just based on how the board was cut during the milling process. Pine is pretty soft so I could see a 22 penetrating further than you might think.

.22 was first used in 1855 or so, so taking a wild *ss guess, it was sometime after that.

Small growth rings and pretty much the same size, that makes it hard to date it based on the ring size.

I used to work for a very large veneer mill (david r webb co) in Indiana. One day, there was a commotion at the head rig (where round logs are sawed in half lengthwise...aka "flitching"). When I got there, they were digging a kentucky long rifle out. Apparently, "way back when", somebody leaned a rifle against a tree and left it there (I would love to know the "why" on that aspect, and have imagined the possibilities often), and the tree simply grew around it. Needless to say, the saw destroyed the rifle, but it was still cool.

Bullets in trees are a huge problem. So much so, that most commercial mills have huge magnets and metal detectors on their lines.
