"Break Free CLP"

Recently I stopped by my local shop and bought a can of the "CLP" product shown below. The guy at the counter had some interesting opinions on the stuff. Said it was an equivalent of something like brake cleaner that leaves no residue and has no lubrication qualities whatsoever.

He may be thinking of the Break Free Powder Blast. It fits his description.

I don't use the Powder Blast. It has an ingredient that attacks plastic shotgun wads...

...and plastic pistol frames/parts...

...and anything else you may have on your bench made of plastic...

I use CLP as a wipedown cleaner/oil. For real cleaning & lube I use other stuff.

I've never had a problem with CLP but once I started using Royal Purple motor oil, I've never looked back.

Seriously, get a quart of Royal Purple, it'll probably last you a life time.

I use it to wipe down blued guns to protect them and also hose down my ar bolts before I shoot them. I'm sure there's better stuff out there but it does what I want it to and it's cheap.

Been using CLP for decades.

Not the best cleaner, not the best preservative, watery lubricant.

But it does do all three decently..

I don't use the aerosol, but CLP is what goes in my range bag, along with a brush (what we used to call "the toothbrush you never want to use on your teeth" when we were teaching firearms maintenance).

I've got a larger selection of specialty cleaning and lubricating products in my cleaning kit at home, for the tougher jobs.

It's decent for a "all in one" duty. But the lube I use for easy and hard to reach is Rem oil. Bore cleaning chores, M-Pro 7. The CLP I bring to the range since I don't want to lug around too any cleaning and lubricant items.

My son, on a training block on the USS Wasp, cleaned Berreta M9s with CLP.

I use CLP only on all of my firearms. If its good enough for my issued rifle it's good enough for everything else I own.

I use it only for my one nickel plated gun. Other solvents/clp's can damage nickel plated firearms.

I use Breakfree CLP to clean. Exclusively, unless I'm using a copper fouling remover.

I use Tetra's tube lubricant to lube. Exclusively.

I use Breakfree's "Collector Oil" to protect my truly rare museum-quality one-of-a kind items and on older- blued items. I don't even consider them to be safe-queens, because in some cases, they are so rare you would be a fool to take them to the range more than a single time to shoot just a couple of rounds.

I'm assuming you use it to lube but what about cleaning?

I've been using CLP for 35 years, starting when it came into the Army inventory.

Unless something else is specified, like lubriplate on an M1 for example, excessive copper or leading, or corrosive ammo, it's about all I use.

So lately, I've been using break free CLP exclusively. I used to use powder blast, clp, rem oil. Now I just use CLP only and it's been good to go. CLP my ar-15, let it sit in my safe for months, and ran 5k rounds though it at a BLM, Not one hiccup.

I do the same with my handguns. Seems like CLP does the job just fine.

I've used BreakFree CLP for 20-30 years now---no real complaints---fine lube---EXCELLENT rust prevent---OK cleaner. If I have a REAL cleaning problem, I will use other products and finish with CLP as rust prevent---but it works in most circumstances. I have several lifetime supplies of CLP in small tubes as they were given to me as samples way back when I was involved in the gun business. I also use it around the house for things like door hinges, locks, etc. I sometimes use Tetra grease on things like Mini 14 sear contact points, etc.---but not often...
