Even the CMP is hosting build parties!

Wow, I guess the build party phenomena has reached critical mass when the CMP starts having them. Wish I could go to Alabama to do this, I bet it will be a lot of fun.

Advanced Maintenance Class Provides Hands-On M1 Rifle Building Experience and a Take-With CMP Special Rifle Upon Completion

By Steve Cooper, CMP Marketing Manager

ANNISTON, AL - The Civilian Marksmanship Program is pleased to announce the availability of the "CMP-AMC" or Advanced Maintenance Class for students with strong mechanical aptitude and a desire to learn how to work on their M1 Garand rifle. The first AMC class of 20 students will begin Friday, 1 November at the CMP's Custom Shop in Anniston. "We are excited to announce the CMP's first educational program of its kind that will provide M1 Garand rifle enthusiasts an opportunity to build their own rifle from the ground up, and take it with them upon completion of the course," said John McLean, CMP Custom Shop Manager and lead AMC instructor.

The three-day class is intended for individuals interested in knowing how the M1 Garand rifle functions in detail, as well as those desiring to know how to properly perform advanced maintenance procedures to their personal rifle(s). The class involves classroom lecture as well as hands-on shop time. Tools will be provided for students to use during the class.

"Students will each assemble from parts their own CMP Special rifle that is included in the AMC fee of $1,400," McLean added.

Some of the key components of the class will include:
    Component purpose and function
    Use of gauges
Commercial barrel installation, chambering and headspace
    Component selection and inspection
Fitting and proper assembly of a complete CMP Special rifle
Some discussion of malfunctions and their remedies
    Accurizing techniques for the M1

This class is not intended for gunsmiths or students with advanced knowledge of the M1 rifle.
To register for the class and to learn more about the program, log onto
http://www.thecmp.org/Training/AMC.htm. The class is expected to fill quickly and students will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

A great way to avoid the very long CMP mail order queue. CMP specials are good rifles. Since the cost of the bare rifle is $1000, you're basically paying $400 for the class and the privilege of building it yourself.

That's a bargain, the knowledge and building your own Garand are worth that easy.

If I wasn't in grad school, I would sign-up in a heartbeat. Even though I've already got my CMP Garand, how cool would it be to build your own under the guidance of their master gunsmiths?
You will never, in your life, have a chance like this again.
If I were you, I would not pass this up. I would not let this go by...this is rare.
        Come on...what harm??

CMP doesn't require an FFL03 to buy surplus rifles
