Yes, switch the mag cut off to "on" position. -
The rifle was designed with the intent that the soldier would use it as a single shot weapon with the five rounds in the magazine as a reserve for when charging enemy got close.Comment

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

You are asking if it is okay to throw an round into the chamber of a 1903 Springfield and then close the bolt on the round so that the extractor snaps over the rim of the cartridge in the chamber? No. Do not do that. The 1903, like the Mauser 98, is a controlled round feed and is meant to be feed from the magazine. The extractor snaps into the extractor groove of the cartridge before the round is ever chambered.
Yes, with enough force, you can get a bolt closed by forcing it over the rim of the cartridge but it won't be long before you break an extractor because it was never designed to do that."All bad precedents began as justifiable measures." Julius CaesarComment
