    Air Rifle Outside City Limits

Okay this may be an obvious question, but I have been searching the internet for about an hour now and cannot find the laws about shooting an air rifle outside city limits.

In my county shooting an air rifle within city limits is prohibited. One of my buddies has a crow problem, they **** everywhere. His property is located just outside city limits. I am Sonoma County.

    Any thoughts?

    Choot 'em!

Ok, seriously though, you'll need to check your county ordinances. Usually, you are fine as long as you're 150 ft from a road. And you can't shoot in the direction of said road, obviously.

Yeah, check your dfg regs first. There are laws about killing crows. It will also take a high power air rifle to do it. The low power ones bounce right off.

Good point Mike, didn't even think about checking laws about killing crows. Knowing California there could be some crazy law.

I found some county ordinances but just need to search more. I found out a whole lot about shooting inside city limits. Its a max $500 fine, 6 months in prison or both. But still searching for what can happen outside.

I just got myself a Crosman Vantage NP. It should do the job.

Takes more than an air rifle to take down a large Pendleton Soul Chicken.

Okay there are apparently federal laws protecting crows. The was some kind of treaty signed way back between Mexico and the United State. It basically states for Mexico to leave the bald eagle alone and therefore the US will not touch the crow.

However, the DFG has made some exceptions to this. The CA DFG has amended this ordinance below.

Under State depredation regulations, only the landowner or tenants or an others authorized in writing may
take crows at any time and in any number to eliminate depredation, health hazard or nuisance. Shotguns,
archery and falconry, and toxicants under additional regulations, may be used.
Got this information from here: http://www.fgc.ca.gov/regulations/2003/crow_regs.pdf

While I am exterminating due to property damage, I don't think air rifles are an acceptable use in doing so. But not to worry I will just use my trained bald eagle and everything should be kosher, falconry is fully okay.

You are correct, but if you have read a little further you would of saw section 472.

                      (d) American crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) may be taken only under the provisions of Section 485 and by landowners or tenants, or by persons authorized in writing by such landowners or tenants, when American crows are committing or about to commit depredations upon ornamental or shade trees, agricultural crops, livestock, or wildlife, or when concentrated in such numbers and manner as to constitute a health hazard or other nuisance. Persons authorized by landowners or tenants to take American crows shall keep such written authorization in their possession when taking, transporting or possessing American crows. American crows may be taken only on the lands where depredations are occurring or where they constitute a health hazard or nuisance. If required by Federal regulations, landowners or tenants shall obtain a Federal migratory bird depredation permit before taking any American crows or authorizing any other person to take them.
American crows may be taken under the provisions of this subsection only by firearm, bow and arrow, falconry or by toxicants by the Department of Food and Agriculture for the specific purpose of taking depredating crows. Toxicants can be used for taking crows only under the supervision of employees or officers of the Department of Food and Agriculture or federal or county pest control officers or employees acting in their official capacities and possessing a qualified applicator certificate issued pursuant to sections 14151-14155 of the Food and Agriculture Code. Such toxicants must be applied according to their label requirements developed pursuant to sections 6151-6301, Title 3, California Code of Regulations.

I am not trying to kill birds for game hunting. They are destroying property and could be causing a health problem.

Always a good idea to still get a license though.

Sounds like the owner needs to get a depredation permit and you listed as on it acting on his behalf.
