    BLM Land

I really like shooting on open BLM land like Panoche (which sounds like it's closed now?). Where can I find a map or something similar of where more public BLM land is where I can shoot? I'm in Modesto, so something within a couple of hours would be very nice.
I looked on the BLM website, and they want money for a map.

Just order one from BLM. Its only four or five bucks, and if you ask, they will highlight all the areas its ok to shoot at.

That's what I read on here, but I haven't called to confirm.

So if you park on the road, it's a 3 mile hike through private land to get there?

No, Only the third gate is closed and locked.
What most do is go to the third gate and park. Don't go past the locked gate, but you can shoot right off to the left of the gate. The Rangers don't mind you shooting there. Please help us out with clean up. Every time I go there, some one always leaves junk, so I will pick up what I can. If everybody did that, the place would stay clean. Unfortunately a lot of people don't.

I'm trying to remember how it works there...the dirt/gravel road right off the main road is still open? (the one that you have to take 3 miles through the private land).
So it's basically still open, just not all of it?

Technically it ISN'T OPEN, BUT! The rangers don't usually say anything if you are at the third gate shooting. They have never said anything to me, and I have been there when they came by on several occasions. Just clean up after yourself.

Always do, thanks for the info
I just want to confirm that the 3rd gate is where the BLM starts, and the private land stops?
                      Or is it farther up?

Yes the third gate is where public BLM land starts. Shooting at the berm towards the left of the gate seems to be ok with the rangers.

Are the rangers over there ok with off list stuff? I'd like take a trip down there one day but don't want to get hassled about an off list AK.

Panoche is open to foot traffic through the third gate ALL YEAR. You just can't drive past it until Oct. 15th. There is no shooting allowed for the first 3 miles of the dirt road. The second gate is that mark. It's 4 miles to the third gate. Most of this is on the BLM website. Keep in mind that it may be 90-100 degrees. Bring some shade and water. The Rangers I have met there were cool with the oll. Just be sure it is ca. legal. They will check them. And you follow the rules posted on their website. Pack out what you pack in! The BLM will close this killer spot if people keep using it for a f####'n dump. And look out for the ripples in the road.
One more thing. The Rattlesnakes are awake. Bring Shotshells for the bathroom breaks.
