Varmint hunting, or any other hunting is going to get stupid as of July 1st. The available areas for most people will be limited. Stupid 'lead ammo ban'.
The thing with firearms is that they are not like any other consumer product, simple ownership of one carries a lot of responsibility.

I'd try along the CA/Mexico border. I was watching the news once and heard something about a lot of two legged coyotes down there.

Define Varmint....what specifically are you looking to hunt?

              calling coyotes

we were calling coyotes on Az mexico boarder and a whole pack came in. Its kind of funny when you trying to hide and sneak across wearing red plaid.

Best luck you'd have is on private land and/or traveling up North. I know that's vague, but not many public opportunities here in the Bay Area.

Yeah I'm not familiar with the bay area either. And I'm pretty sure birds are not considered varmint here in CA. Fox and groundhog (if you can find them) I wouldn't guess are not varmint either.

For Grey Squirrel, Coyote, & Rabbit there are some places in the foothills and northern state (BLM land (Bureau of Land Management)) that are good. Stay away from lakes, but near Lake Berryessa in the hills is one place that isn't too far from the Bay Area.

If you want to go up to Redding and outskirts there's a lot of BLM land near the Sacramento River.

Find places with Oak trees to get good sized grey squirrels.

Also - one thing that Cali has a lot of everywhere (don't know about PA) is wild pig. A pig tag is like $7 and you can hunt year round.

                        Thanks guys,
Sounds like pig hunting would be the way to go.
