What should I do ?

So I brought my remington 510 to a lgs and wanted to d/t it for scope mounts . The "gunsmith"mangled it and welded The reciever and now the bolt won't cycle and not to mention the finish is all messed up . I took it to clothey and sons and the gunsmith there said when they welded it they may have taken Tue hardness out of the reciever and his opinion is that the gun is unsafe . The first ship said they will replace it but now they say they took it to someone else and had it safety checked and its fine. They said they would give me a new rifle but want to keep mine to resell .

Get the new gun & don't look back.

How bad is the welding?

How are they going to replace a discontinued rifle? Those hacks should never be near a gun. If the rifle has sentimental value, take it to a good shop and have the work corrected.

If they screwed it up, they should pay to have it corrected at a better shop. Their fault, their cost! If they balk at that, take the new rifle, and keep the old one. If they don't like that, tell them it's gonna cost you as much as the replacement rifle to get it fixed!

Single shot bolt gun . Same as a 512 but no tube feed

I don't know how you get passed the sentimentality issue? There's no price you can put on that. They could make it ugly but, what could they have done to ruin the integrity of it? There has to be a bunch of those out ther to replace it.

Do I trust their safety evaluation. And keep my rifle or trade them guns or keep my rifle and try to get a new one from them

Again it depends on what the sentimentality means to you . That other rifle sure looks nice . I try to get both. I would think at the least they would be liable for bringing your gun back to original condition. You know it's not a very expensive gun .
