    handgun + light techniques

    hey all,

I saw this in my email and thought it would make for a good thread.

What is the best tactical light technique to use for a defensive gun use if you practice concealed carry? That depends on the situation. Here are 4 techniques to know and practice.

A good DVD on the subject is Night Master - "Low Light" Shooting & Flashlight Techniques by Bill Wilson and Ken Hackathorn. They review various methods and discuss the plus and minus of each. An interesting section is the comparison of different ammo and the muzzle flash. You can pick it up at Midwayusa.

I opted for a gun mounted light but also have a Surefire light and use the technique for that short light.

One of the things I've been told about the FBI Technique that's not mentioned in this article is when the FBI did the study they found most shot high and right. So holding the flashlight in the left hand and high would draw fire away. As the article mentions this is only good until you fire. The additional reasoning is if you are looking for someone hiding they will probably shoot at you first and could do so before you see them so you are giving full consideration to them having the first shot.

Yeah I lock my wrists when using a light myself. I tried all the methods shown and still found it to be my preferred choice. I think I would prefer a light on the weapon as well if I had the option on my carry gun.
