Well just a quick update on my trip to Atlanta. Check-in at SAC was a complete no brainer. Just declared it at check in and they had me open my locked case to verify that it was unloaded. Put the orange signed tag in the luggage and sent me on my way. Got to Atlanta and kind of expected to have my luggage in "special handling" area but it was on the turnstile with everyone else's.
The trip back from Atlanta was a little different but still easy. I had to declare at check-in like before but then had to walk over to TSA and have them check for explosives. The "wiped" my luggage and my locked gun case and screened the "wipy" thing. The agent even put massive amount of tape around the double zipper of my luggage after I told her I didn't have a lock for the checked bag, just the gun case. She was just being curtious, not a rule or anything. After that I was sent on my way. No one at either airport was the least bit concerned or alarmed about my weapon. I picked up my luggage at SAC from the turnstile like normal.
All in all, a good experience.
