    Tax Question on firearm purchase

I purchased a rifle from a online retail firearm shop in California and paid taxes on it as well as shipping. My FFL received the gun and when I did transfer and dros on the gun I was charged taxes on the price of the rifle minus shipping. Is this correct to pay taxes twice on a firearm sold online in CA? Thanks

No. The receiving FFL screwed up. They are only to charge taxes on firearms incoming from out of state.

    You're owed a refund.

Hell no. Show him the receipt from where you bought it that's shows you already paid the sales tax. Get your money back.

That sounds like a pretty stupid mistake for a dealer to make. He shouldn't be dealing with the original sale, but may have received a copy of the sales slip (marked paid) with the rifle. Is your FFL a retail gun store or an independent gun dealer working out of his house? Just present him with the original sales receipt and ask for your refund. You should only pay $19.00 for the dealer's record of sale (DROS) fee and maybe $5.00 in safety enforcement fees due to gun lock law. Not sure about the $5 fee.

Independent but I bought 3 rifles all at once and 2 were out of state, I didnt catch it either, must have been just a mistake.
