    Remington 700 surface rust

I have a brand new in the box Remington 700 SPS tactical. I took it out and saw a little surface rust, I used a cleaning colth and a microfiber and rem oil to clean.

I read somewhere that it's recommended to use 0000 steel wool first. Then clean afterwards, citing this will cause less damage than spreading rust contaminates around?

If its surface rust make sure you kill it and prevent it from rusting further.

Yeah. I took it out of the stock and used a mircofiber colth and put kitty litter with Silica in the box in a sock .

4-ought steel wool and plenty of oil...I use what's left over after I change the truck oil. Rub gently but firmly.

TreWax or MiniWax (what you use on a real hardwood floor) does well for preventing rust, but check the weapon every week or so and make sure you've removed all the rust.
