That's basically my strategy too, especially about the cash part. I use my credit card only for the convienence, not as a source of income. It gets paid off each month to avoid the interest.
Most of my paycheck goes to 401K, a huge chunk into savings, the rest is budgeted for living expenses, then whatever's left over is spending money. It's amazing how much money you can save each month if you just stop buying other stuff.
1) No car payment (+$300-$500)
2) No cable TV bill (+$50-$100)
3) No cell phone bill (+$50-$100)
4) Only eat out occasionally, No starbucks/lunches (+$200-$300)
5) Only watch movies once a month instead of every weekend (+$80)
6) Pay off CC bill each month (+$50 in interest saved)
6) I have a girlfriend (-$500 month)

Just cut out some extraneous expenses and you can easily save enough money to buy a gun. Although I'm still saving for a house so the firearms purchases are the first things to get cut. Oh yeah, and only buy stuff that's on sale or secondhand, you can save a crapload
One thing I learned to do was review my expenses each month (which is why I use CC to purchase most things, it's easier to keep track on the bill). Keep track of EVERYTHING you spend money on for a month or two, then go over it and see where your money goes. I'm betting you can easily save a few bucks.
Or if you're still young, study hard, get into a good school, graduate, get a good paying job, and have as much money as you want. That's the easiest way.
