Register less than 30" rifle?

I tried using the search function, but still couldnt find my answer. I thought I read on here somewhere that you *could* register a rifle with a 16" or longer barrel, but less than 30" overall if you got it signed off. I thought I remember reading that a judge or sheriff could sign off on it before you sent it to DOJ.

Can someone clarify this or point me to the penal code section regarding overall length?

you can have a rifle less that 30 inches oal but breater than 26 1/2 oal
as long as it is either rimfire or not-autoloading

I have good news for you. You don't have to register any CA-legal rifles in CA. Just DROS them, which isn't registration. If you are curious about short barreled rifles and "assault weapons," you can't have them if you didn't register them on or about 1/1/2000 (the registration period extended a while into 2000, but the buying period was closed 12/31/1999.

In California, semi automatic rifles must be 30" or longer in overall length. The barrel must be longer than 16". Shotguns must be 26" or longer with a 18" barrel or longer.

(E) A flash suppressor.
(F) A forward pistol grip.

(3) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has an overall length of less than 30 inches.

So, yes it does include SKS's and fixed-mag AK-folders.

Sorry about the confusion. I have a uncle that is a judge so I thought maybe if it was a option I could talk to him about it. At this point I guess I should be figuring out how to make it 30" so I can bring it into california.

The reason I asked was I saw a good deal on gunbroker I couldnt pass up so I bought it. Looks like I need to either fix a longer barrel on it or permanatley attach a longer muzzle brake. (as well as other mods to make it ca legal)

Yeah, you also can't bring in the 30 round, 42 round and 20 round magazines.

You would need a fixed magazine or you would have to fill in the thumbhole and remove the flash suppressor to make that CA legal as well as make it 30" or more in either scenario.

And, as another poster mentioned, you could not legally import those magazines if assembled.
Also, if you fix the magazine in place, it must be 10 rounds or less.

Nope, judge or sherriff can't sign off on it. You may be thinking of the CLEO sign-off for an NFA Form 1 or Form 4.

Just out of curiousity, has anyone on this board or does anyone know anyone that was issued a license based off the FD030DWapp.pdf form? For a .50 or a AW or machine gun or sbr/sbs?
