Storing firearms in a foam lined case.

I keep my pistols in foam lined cases, but each pistol is covered in oil and placed in a gun sock.

That can work, but then you've got a gun covered in more oil than it needs to be, and they end up taking up a bit of space once you start trying to do that with rifle and shotgun bags.

A proper safe with some method to dehumidify it, or at least a stack on cabinet with a dessicant canister(or one of those units you plug into the wall periodically) bolted to the wall is better than sitting in foam cases.

If you have to store your gun in a case, there are cases with closed cell foam which doesn't hold moisture like open cell foam. Get that. Then, when you're storing the gun...take the foam out anyway. Set it on top of the case or something. Wrap the gun in a gun sock or silicone cloth. Keep some desiccant in the case. Check it and wipe it down weekly. Heck if the case is big enough, you can even run a golden rod in it.

Rust. The foam holds moisture against the metal. If you MUST store in foam put the gun in a silicon gun sock.

I store my guns in socks mostly to prevent handling damage in the safe. They get inspected & oiled frequently.

The foam deteriorates and gets stuck onto the gunstock. I've seen it happen on a friend's guns who kept his guns in a safe on foam long term.

They became a pain to scrape off and they also incurred rust.

I think for long term storage, stick them in those VpCI bags or, at the very least, get one of them silicon impregnated gun socks.

I have a buddy who stored his shotgun in a foam case for about 2 years and you can see signs of rust. Would that be the main culprit?

Ive only stored my guns in foam cases, so this thread is an eye opener. I def. need something else!

I leave a rifle in a pelican case all the time.

There are many many different types of foam. Open/closed cell is irrelevant....

Even some 'closed cell' foams may have acids in them.

Pelican foam is inert. I dont worry about that rifle at all that lives in that case. I do have 2 large socks of dessicant in the case as well to absorb moisture.

I did have a blued handgun that the blue was damaged within about 2 months because the wrong type of foam with acids ate into it...

I would not hesitate to keep a firearm in a pelican case indefinately as long as large amounts of dessicant are used. I would not trust any other case though.

Someone held onto this rifle case for me for about a year. They had moisture problems in the area it was stored. They checked my rifle- it was fine. Paperwork stored in the same area was moldy.....

Get a **GOOD** airtight watertight case with a lot of dessicant.... and it's fine.

Go cheap on the case and questionable foam, it's a disaster waiting to happen....

If I place the firearms inside a gun bag with gun wrap paper, would it be safe to place in the foam lined case?

My dad has stored a blued mod 70 in a cheap case for over 30 years. He pulls it out a couple times a year to lube it and the blue still shines like the day he bought it.

Never store firearms in a foam lined case, they will rust over time.
