I am waiting for a case where a homeowner is observed, through a window, with a gun and is then charged with brandishing. If it hasn't happened yet, I expect it soon.

In the late 80s I had a friend who was sitting in his apartment cleaning his guns. He had the window and blinds open. Someone passing by on the walkway saw inside and called the police on him, who came by to "check it out." He wasn't arrested or anything, but some nimrod seeing you with a gun on your own property or even inside your own house could mean a visit from the constabulary.

I'm certain he's not the only one that has happened to in the past 20+ years.

So someone in the middle of the night would have to jump over your high locked gate to even be able to ring your doorbell? I think that would warrant a call to the local police.

You can CC on your property, so walk out to the front gate and confront the said person man to man. If hostile, leave and call the cops. If the person does anything stupid like draw on you, shoot them in the face as many times as you can. You should be covered either way if you're on your property, and all you would be doing is abiding by the law.
