need some help picking out 20" Stainless steel Upper

I'm in the market for a 20" Stainless steel Upper. Would like to make it my Bench shooter / hunter. I have been looking at BCM upper and PSA uppers in 20" SS. Would any one have some more input on what to look for? Chambered specks, twist, what brake to get and things like that. Good the bad the ugly.

"I have one BCM 16" free float upper that is spot on. BCM just is not stocking the 20" SS uppers right now."

BCM does have a 20" barrel in stock if that helps
This BCM 20" SAM-R barrel is a stripped, rifle-length gas, SS410 AR15 barrel with gas ports installed, dimpled and has a heavy-weight profile.

Thanks for the link... I was hopping to get a done upper or most of the way done. Do not have the tools or skills right now to complete a full custom upper.

PSA has one with a hammer forged barrel on special right now.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...

I did see that one. Dose any one have this upper?

this upper is in 5.56 Nato Chamber or shooed I hold out for .223 Wylde hybrid chamber? Also dose not list if it is an FN or Wilson..

I'm in no supper rush to get one today. I would like to get as much info as I can be for handing over my cash. Then do some more shopping as needed. I have been doing a lot of reading but all the upper I read about are "out of stock"

I have a RRA 20" stainless A4 Varmiter. It shot ok for the first few hundred rounds, and then I don't know what happened and I'm not really that good of shot, but the thing became a tack driver! I mean cover 5 shots with a nickle at 100 yds off the bench. Mine is .223 wylde 1/8 twist. Nostler 55 grain varmigeddon/ hornaday 55grain Z-max with 23 grains of AA2230.
It cost me 689 before the last year.

That's very close to my PSA upper. Mine, though, has the FN CHF regular steel barrel. I can't say enough good things about it. I've got about a thousand rounds through it so far, and it's been completely flawless so far.

That barrel is probably a Wilson, which isn't a bad thing. To the best of my knowledge - and I admit that my best is at times not good enough - the only hammer-forged barrels that PSA sources from FN are not stainless, and if it doesn't say FN in the advertisement, then it's not FN. My barrel has the FN logo stamped on it, so I'm pretty sure I know where it came from.

But, that said, CHF isn't necessarily the be-all end-all for rifling. In all honesty, it's a way for a barrel maker to make a lot of barrels, very quickly, and very cheaply, if the volume is high enough. The quality tends to be extremely consistent, although it does degrade steadily over the life of the mandrel. HOWEVER ... the thing is, the starting point for that curve is only as high as the quality of the mandrel itself.

When it comes to AR's, the only thing that CHF is good for is bragging rights. When you're looking at a SAW or something, yeah, it makes a difference - the CHF process produces a more wear-resistant barrel, but when you're shooting semi-auto, 99% of shooters will never wear out a button- or cut-rifled tube, never mind a CHF tube.

The wait for a Larue upper is over 12 months. I was lucky last year, I got my 556 OBR in 5 weeks from Larue. I wanted to buy a 16" Larue upper so I could build a companion for it. I bought a PSA 16" flat top upper with the forged FN barrel instead since the wait with them is about 4 weeks. I get it on Friday and will use my Larue lower to test it with. Still waiting for my polymer 80% lower.
