Has anyone built a hard case?

I know there is a forum on cases, but this is more concerned with the building of one... mods feel free to move it if need be.

Anyway... i need to get a hard case, and a big one. 50" long x 16" wide x 8" deep lets say. I have been thinking about building it myself, possibly out of aluminum. Seems like a fun little project, i would have to order the foam from one of those websites, but all the other tools and materials i would already have at work.

It would be nice to get EXACTLY what i want, very stong, good locking system, the only thing would be the weight, but im not too worrried about it because it will not be used too too much.

Has anyone built one before? Pictures? Thoughts in general...?

I have been thinking about one for some time, but haven't got around to it yet.

Couldn't find info on building gun cases, but a search for guitar cases came up with some good info.

Using these as a starting point, you should be able to whip up anything you want.

My friend used to work for this place and I had him build me a flight case for my mixer and 2 turntables.

Check out the two crates on top, and that should give you an idea if you didn't already have one.

A simple metal brake and wire feed mig will do the job. Depending on how much you value your time as well as material costs, it might be cheaper to have these guys build it.

I've been working on building a hot wire foam cutter after work for the past couple weeks (I keep burning up transformers by using the wrong wire).

If you're gonna build your own case, you could also build your own foam cutter so that you don't have to order custom-cut foam.

It maybe cheaper to buy one than build one. You could just get a Pelican case, if you break it they will fix it... for life. Can't really beat that kind of warranty.

The difference between a sharp knife and a tabletop hotwire cutter is like the difference between a hacksaw and a jigsaw. Not to mention how precise you can be when you use posterboard cutouts as wire guides.
