    Guns on school property

So on a whim and while driving to school this morning, I gave a call to my college police department and asked them if they would allow me to store my firearm with them while I attend classes. The woman put me on hold (sounded a little nervous) and came back on after a minute and said it was OK, granted it was unloaded and in a locked case (duh!). She asked me for my name and phone number and the caliber of the weapon, to which I replied that I didn't have one but I was just asking permission in the event that I wanted to do so (I do plan on open carrying after school and/or target shooting.) I asked her if knowing the caliber only allowed me to have one gun ever or at a time at the department and she said that it was just for them to know so that they would know what to expect (my thoughts on this in a second...) She then said that in such an event that I need to call them ahead of time and tell them that the Sergeant OK'd it.

Now, the thoughts that ran through my head at the "state the caliber so we know what to expect" comment... I can just imagine them telling everyone to don their Level III body armor if I said ".44 Magnum" and only their Level I when I said ".22LR," hahaha. Just a funny thought running through my head.

But how rad is that? I totally thought I was going to get a big "NO" on that. I am most happy.

    Wow thats cool.

Over here in CSUB, i asked if I can leave my rifle in my truck (unloaded and locked in a case of course) and the officer just slammed me and said...

"NO!!! If you do that and we find out, you will go to jail!!!!"

Don't do it even if the sarge says it's OK. IIRC you can't bring a firearm within 1000 feet of a school. I think it's PC 626.9 for K-12 schools and I can't remember the PC for colleges and universities off the top of my head.

Sure there are exemptions to the penal code, but I don't think having the campus police hold your gun while you go to class is one of them. Why did they say it was OK, just call the Sgt. first? Because you asked about committing a criminal act and they want to catch you.

You can, as long as it is in a locked case and unloaded. If you couldn't at least transport it legally, then you could never get to the range without hitting a school zone. Also, if you couldn't transport it, then there couldn't be rifle teams. Also, there are no laws concerning the concealed carry of firearms on college campuses, it is up to the college whether or not to deny carry (semi-unrelated but still relevant)

PC for colleges in that aspect is non-existent, I can actually open carry my handgun outside of the college and there is nothing that can be legally done to me.

I am sure many students do that actually, they just don't talk about it.

While that may be true for private schools (being able to prohibit carry on their private property), public schools must abide by state law, which allows CCW by those with valid licenses on school grounds.

You can CCW on a public university or college (if you have a CCW license) as permitted by the PC.

HOWEVER, the school can enact an administrative policy against carrying a weapon on campus for any reason without the expressed consent of the Chancellor / Campus PD Chief / etc.

They might not be able to arrest you, but they sure can expel you.
