Interesting graphic, but the numbers are extremely dubious. Will post more (and sources) when I have time later, but quick and dirty response is they're claiming 4,441 "people killed" in 2010, when the actual number of firearm homocides in 2010 was 8,775. That's using the FBI Unified crime report that they claim to be using themselves. No idea where they got 4,441. That number doesn't correlate with anything. Not homocides, not suicides, not justified shootings...I'm at a loss.

They're also generating numbers for 2013 via accumulated news reports over Twitter. So they're counting every reported incident of a gun-related death, including suicides (which historically account for over 60%) and justified homocides (law enforcement and self-defense shootings).

So as of right now, in June, they are suggesting that there's over twice as many people killed by guns through June of 2013 than all of 2010, but that's very innacurate and misleading. It would probably be closer to 3,838 so far assuming ~40% non-suicide deaths.

Further, if we were to project that rate out through the rest of the year, we'd have roughly 25,587 firearm-related deaths for 2013...which would actually be a pretty significant decline.

And of course, if they ran the same comparison for motor vehicle accidents, they'd have a much more shocking picture. Ther's simply more children killed in motor vehicle accidents (leading cause of non-intentional death for children) than are shot to death. Homocides by gun rates are highest in the 14-20 year old range.

It is probably a proof of concept application to be shown to a client. Like I said I ran across it in a seminar about graphics. It is on a graphic designers website. It is probably slated to be delivered upon completion to a MAIG or Brady website once finalized. It was shown at Adobe Max 2013 in LA Last week.
