Do I have to have bullet button on my AR 15

    Hi people
I have AR 15 & AK 47 both purchased about 10 years ago,
Some said to me that I have to have bullet button in order for me to
take it to the range & shoot,
Some said it is still OK for me to take them to the range with out bullet button since it's old,
    So...... I'm big time.

10 years ago means you had the ability to register them as assault weapons before 2000. So since they're registered AW, you can have detachable magazines and all of the evil features you want.

if they are registered aw`s then you dont need a bb or maglock.if not then yes you`ll need either one or go featureless with a mmg/u15.make sure the receivers on those rifle are not on the list if they not reg`d also.

Did you do the AW registration first off, just because you bought them 10 years ago, and drosed them thru a dealer, doesnt mean you registered them. But if you did do the additional step of registering them as AW's, and you have your DoJ approval letter, then you can use them as california legal aw's. No bullet button or Monster Man Grip or Prince 50 needed.

If you bought them 10 years ago, and did not register them, then in all probability they are banned by name and are illegal no matter what you do.

Use the AW ID Flowchart to answer this question.

So did you register them, or were you asleep at the wheel?

If they're registered, no problem - you do not need a bullet button or any other alteration in order to legally use them. I would, however, take photocopies of the registration paperwork. And of course they need to be transported unloaded in a locked case, but you knew that already, right?

If you failed to register them, odds are overwhelming that they are currently banned, cannot be registered, and are a felony to possess. If that is the case, no bullet button or any other modification will make them CA legal. They need to be disassembled and transported out of state as quickly and stealthily as possible. Even that is a little risky because you might get pulled over - to be really safe you need a small hole in the back yard filled with thermite in which to say good bye to your receivers.

Still confused? Give us more facts, we'll give you more opinions.

These threads always make me laugh. Some new guy comes asking about his unregistered assault weapon and then doesn't return to the thread for a few days to find out that he is screwed.

These types of threads should be deleted to protect the dim OPs.

Agreed. Why is it they never stick around for the answer?

Now there's a great bit of advice! Reminds me of the old Monty Python skit where the guy is being stoned. "Worse, how could it be any worse?"

DO NOT TRANSPORT THEM! Call an attorney to be sure that what you are doing will not land you in a State provided room.

Not everyone uses the internet 24/7. I have asked questions and not gotten answers for a few days, and some questions get several answers the first hour!

Great. So you have a cal reg'ed assault weapon. You can do whatever you want to it as long as it meets minimum length requirements.

Why the heck would you think you need a bullet button for your rifle....why do you think you registered it in the first place....

You did notice, didn't you, what I suggested as a truly safe method of handling the situation?

Even that is a little risky because you might get pulled over - to be really safe you need a small hole in the back yard filled with thermite in which to say good bye to your receivers.
In other words, melt the receivers. Fortunately, he claims they are registered AW's and so no stealth or fireworks are necessary.

I've lived in CA for ten years, drive constantly, have been pulled over ONCE (and really *really* deserved it), never ticketed, never searched. For the sake of retaining ownership, if I found myself in possession of something that's illegal in CA but still valuable elsewhere, I would probably find a way to get it safely out of state. Safely being a relative term, of course. There are plenty of storage lockers in Nevada where people keep sporting goods, and plenty of public land where all manner of things are likely burried. I can envision a couple of AR receivers fitting quite nicely into a coffee can, subsequently filled with wax and a string put down the center as a wick, you now have a really big candle that for some psychotic reason you felt compelled to bury in the Nevada desert, keeping careful GPS coordinates - just can't account for some people's crazy hobbies I guess.
