ATF letter and exempt from Fed SBR law in no way controls how it's regarded vs separate California SBR law.

    1. The 'device' looks appreciably akin to design of a CAR/M4 buttstock. It'd be very very easy for a CA judge to regard a pistol with such a device as an SBR ... "intended to be fired from the shoulder".

    2. Furthermore there are no separate/overriding regulatory definitions of stocks that would help us clarify/restrict applicability of CA SBR law.

    3. Given CA SBR has 'constructive possession' concept applicable (and is very broad) I wouldn't even own this - separate and unmounted from an AR pistol (and if you own no rifles) - because this is not just a simple AW 'evil feature' matter. [You also should not own spare regular buttstocks if all you own is an AR pistol, without also owning an AR rifle/receiver.]

seems to me you could accomplish the same thing with a padded arm band that you can keep in your underwear drawer.

If I ever did this, that's what I'd do (and probably will do if I own an AR pistol because my range asks we shoot it "like a pistol").

I also wonder about sling-shot like braces that hinge off the grip. They would do the same thing but not be stable enough to be a shoulder rest.

I know it's not a direct answer, but I don't trust the CA DOJ (or the Fed DOJ) to enforce the law as written, at least not for now.

        I'm in maximum-caution mode.
