buying used gun....HELP!!!

I am interested in buying a used gun. I have never done it before and the gun would need to be shipped to me. I have a bunch of questions on this...

What is the best way of handling the money? I wont be going to check the gun out as its too far away.

How does shipping work?
How do I get it registered in my name?
Is there any paperwork I need to fill out?
What do I need from the seller to make the transaction legit?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

The gun is already in CA. I am hesitant on all levels because I don't know.

What kind of gun is it? Is it on the California roster?

It must be sent to an FFL. You go in, DROS it. Wait your 10 days and then pick it up once you pass the background check.

Take it home

Clean and inspect it

Log onto Calguns and complain about how you bought a gun that isn't what you thought it would be.

Try to sell the broken gun so someone who is also willing to by a gun sight unseen.

Folks have been kind of walking around the answers a bit.

First item, already noted: unless the handgun is a real antique the transfer MUST go through a licensed CA Federal Firearms Licensee. (ETA - that means the gun must be shipped from seller to dealer - cannot go directly to buyer.)

1) have the seller contact the gun store where the gun is to be shipped; I expect you will pay the shipping.

2) The Dealer's Record Of Sale will take care of that

3) Lots - the dealer will walk you through it. You will need proof of identity and age (usually your driver license with your current address) and proof of residency (most commonly your car registration, with an address that matches your DL).

4) Up to the dealer.

Also be prepared to give the receiving FFL between $100 and $200 for the Sales tax , DROS fee ( CA dealer record of sale) and the dealer transfer fee.

I have bought several used guns thru gunbroker.com and from individuals. Everything has to go thru an FFL for the DROS and 10 day. Now the FFL has to collect tax also plus whatever fee they charge. Unlike buying from a storefront, for a same price gun, you end up paying shipping and FFL fees on top of taxes are DROS.
