Gun for my mom

I've been talking to my mom about guns more lately and now she wants me to go to the gun store with her next time I'm in Florida (where she lives) and pick out a gun for her.

I am thinking of having her get a 10/22 or similar. She wants a hunting/defense gun. So it's that or a shotgun. She doesn't hunt big game so I know a .22 will be fine. What do you guys think? She doesn't want a lot of recoil, just something she can easily handle for now. Later she'll pick up something with a little more bang to it?

Given those two choices, shotgun. If she's got some druggie breaking down her door, the 10/22 isn't going to make a big dent. 12ga would be ideal, but 20ga wouldn't be such a horrible thing either and it might satisfy the low-recoil requirement.

Now, depending on where she is in FL, she may also need to think about gators. I imagine that with the right ammo, an SKS would be cost-effective and the 7.62x39mm round should certainly take down a gator. It'd also be a good general purpose home defense weapon, and 7.62x39mm isn't THAT punishing. Certainly nothing like a Mosin-Nagant.

And there are folks over on sksboards.com that use SKSes for hunting deer...

Edit: Just noticed your sig line... I liked it, even bought a t-shirt with it printed on it a few years back. Then, I read up on Snopes.com and discovered that Hitler actually didn't say that. :/

I also saw a thing about how hitler didn't actually say it, but I also saw something that kindof lead more towards him having definatley said it once. So I don't know which is true. I just like the quote.

No problem. Depending on budget, you may also want to look into the Knoxx or other-brand recoil-compensating buttstocks. She might be ok with a 12ga shell if the stock is designed to absorb the recoil.

Very interesting - do you happen to have a link to the pro-quote article? It's a perfect quote, and I wouldn't mind saying it if it could be more or less confirmed to be true. Or at least more in dispute than the Snopes article lead me to believe.

Smith & Wesson in .38 Special in a J-Frame. Good size grip for small hands. Easy to operate. Just pull the trigger. Maybe even get one without the external hammer (spurless).

There are obviously other cooler options for a self defense gun, but a S&W J-frame revolver in 38 is a good gun for personal defense for those who are not experienced with firearms.

Well, if she is in florida, why not an AK instead of the SKS? seems like mags would be easier than clips...

For one, I'm assuming price is an issue - but if it isn't, then yes I'd go for the AK over the SKS for home defense. Hunting is also a point he brought up - generally, SKSes are more accurate than budget-priced AK's.

This is all assuming one gun must fit all.

I would personally go AK or 12ga (20ga if recoil's still a big issue) for home defense, bolt-action rifle in a not-too-aggressive caliber for hunting.

For mom an unweldly long arm would only get her to clumsily handle it and getting it taken away (disarmed) whe SHTF including the 10/22 or shotgun.

If mom wants fun those are good choses.

I mom wants something she could grab and easily use then I would vote for a small frame titanium hammerless (for putting in jacket pocket) DA in 38 special.

Also consider something like a DA semi in 380 or 32.

Or maybe a simple 22 LR DA if you think mom will practice alot, like the Beretta.

How about a pistol caliber lever rifle?

One in 44mag/44special could be used for hunting, home defense and plinking since you have to option to shoot either the heavy or light .44 cartridges.

They are smaller and lighter than many other rifles but still have low recoil.

They look more "mom friendly" than an AK47.

In Florida, if you're willing to pay the NFA taxes, you can have a real assault rifle.

The orginal post mentioned that she would possibly use it for hunting, so that would throw the Ti snubby out along with most handguns suggested. Plus, long guns are eaiser to aim and fire, and carbines aren't any eaiser to take away than a handgun.

The best factor in favor of an AR/AK is that if Granny is sitting on her porch post hurricane with an assault rifle, roving bands of bad people will give her a wide berth. Thanks to Hollywood, the average 'banger is more intimidated by an assault rifle than they are by a nice Holland & Holland big game rifle. The best defensive weapon is one you don't have to use.
