LA Area Coyotes

All have read/heard of the recent rash of attacks by coyotes in the greater LA area. Nothing new but several recently. And, tragic.

For decades I hunted coyotes and quail in areas of SoCal that are now closed to all access and no firearms allowed. Miles and miles and miles of fencing! Your tax dollars at work. [Only illegals have access to these areas now! ]

A headline today: Scientists probe recent coyote attacks in California. So, wondering if anyone studying the rash of attacks is factoring closing of vast areas of land, much remote with little human habitation, to increases in coyote population. I doubt it ... because they don't want to know!

Leghold trap bans have their effect as well

Our local imbeciles banned trapping in Santa Clara County(maybe it's a state law?) a while ago. Seems too many pets were ending up on the wrong end of predator control. That was the 'official' reason for the ban anyway. Now Coyotes are dining on the local pet population and parents are warned not to let their small children unattended in their own back yards.

I swear, there ought to be a panel or commission that looks into ridiculous laws and not only strikes them down, but punishes those idiots who wasted our time and money for it in the first place.

Its only a matter of time before more and more incidents happen... And soon it will be the mountain lions, jumping in to the fun....

Man has abdicated his role at the top of the food chain.... We stopped eating Mtn Lions & Coyotes decades ago (You ask my older relatives, them's good eatin'!) And then this odd notion of animals right took over that somehow thinks a nature devoid of its top predator is somehow better for nature... So we passed laws outlawing the hunting of them... And now they're getting out of control, starving and doing what nature intended them to do in that situation.... They're hunting the weakest animals available to them- Pets and small children.

There's a great book called "Beast in The Garden" that came out in the 90's about cougar attacks near Boulder, CO. The takeaway is that mountain lions habituate to people over time if they have no reason to fear them, and may actually teach that "fearlessness" to their offspring. But oh no, we can't hunt the cute wittew puddytats because that would be just mean...

What area in LA is this exactly

I live in the San Bernardino mountains, it is about 75 miles east of L.A. We have coyote "(where's fluffy?) snatch and grabs" happen all the time. People don't understand that coyotes are huge opportunists when it comes to easy meals, whether it's roadkill, dead fish on the lake shore or the next door neighbors yappy 8oz. long hair mexican rat terrier, they will take what they can get.

The coyotes in our area are pretty fearless. Part of this fearlessness comes from regular interaction with humans, such as people who feel they are some sort of self perceived "dancing in the moonlight nature goddess" and can interact with all of Gods creatures, thus giving them the right to feed wild animals on a very regular basis. Presto! No fear of humans and instant problem.

You will know when a pack of coyotes has whacked a dog, because you will hear the dog bark like crazy, then yipe like crazy with the sound of the yipe trailing off into the distance. A short time later you will the pack howling.

Owls, hawks and eagles also do snatch and grabs but are very quiet about it.

We do see cougar and bobcat on a very irregular basis. When we do see them in the back country, it's usually their butts that we see, moving at a good rate of speed away from you.

Bears are just a pain in the ***.

But... according to California, cougars are endangered! You mean they're wrong? Again!?

IMO, the deer in this area will be a problem soon, too. Car-deer accidents aren't good, either. Sure, the deer are little here, but hitting an 80 lb deer at 75 MPH on 280 isn't exactly a good thing.

I love how politics took over where science was supposed to rule.

What area in LA is this exactly

Recent problems have been in mtns NE of LA. But, also incidents in mtns north Norco, Arrowhead/Big Bear, and SW of Corona. Cougars, too.

A friend lives in Brentwood (not OJ!) and has problems with deer eating his landscaping and coyotes carrying off daughter's cats! It is widespread. I have watched both in his yard from his living room window!

Co-worker in Poway had coyotes hop into the pen with kids two sheep and kill both.

About 20 years (maybe more) ago Disney did a show about coyotes in LA proper. Incredible film of coyotes eating pets' food on back porches, walking along concrete block fences, living in culverts with young, walking down streets like they owned them (maybe they should .. they'd be better than some of the residents). Has only gotten worse as we pressure wildlife with sprawl and our gov't protects them and other wildlife. Want to protect ... stop building!

A few years ago the F&G estimated San Diego County had a half million coyotes. I was actively hunting them and it was common to call in several from one stand. I decided that if SD County had 1/2 mil then San Bernardino, Imperial and Riverside Counties (frequented one or the other every weekend!) had a million each.

Yep, heard it all too often. And we get city idiots move out here, driving too fast on our dirt roads (where there might well be horses around the corner) actually feeding the coyotes and letting their dogs roam freely.

Then they pin notices on our mailboxes "Has anyone seen Fido?"

We've had packs of up to six coyotes cross our driveway, not ten feet from the house. They've ripped open my chicken pens equally close up (now protected with heavy gauge weldwire and a 5 foot chainlink fence). Also had bobcats just a few feet from the house. And rattlesnakes inside my garage, inches from the door into the house. "Aw, leave them alone, they were here first!"
