Vehicle Registration has my Dads name... will it work?

    Hey everyone,

I'm supposed to go into my local firearms dealer in a couple days and finish paying for my first handgun(I already have a deposit on it). But I just realized that my Vehicle registration is technically in my dads name, but it has the same last name and same address. Will it still work as a valid proof of residence?

I am a college student and my address on my DL is my permanent address, so it does not match my lease at this time.

Does it sound like I am SOL?

nope, it has to be in your name.

if your DL does not have your current residence address on it, you will need a .gov-issued document on it that has that current address on it to satisfy federal Proof of Identity requirements. And you also need to satisfy CA's Proof of Residency requirements as well.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

What about proof of registration to vote? That matches my name and address...

You are supposed to notify DMV within 10 days of changing your residence or mailing address. VC 14600.

in the end, you need to ask your FFL what he will accept.

some dealers will accept that for PoI, but it doesn't seem to meet PoR requirements, so you would probably need to come up with something that does meet PoR.

I was told that I didn't have to change it because it is considered a temporary mailing address, since I don't live here year round or permanently.

Interesting in that DMV considers your residence to be wherever you are actually living, but I agree it would be a pain to have to keep changing it back and forth.

It looks like you can use your actual residence address on the DROS form and provide a lease or utility bill for that address, according to CA DOJ:

I just was looking at that also, and that is probably the route I will have to take. Thank goodness all the utilities are in my name

There has to be some solution, as I assume there are a lot of people in similar situations.

Looking at that DOJ page, I also see it states you cannot use a hunting or fishing license, as "these documents are not issued by the government." So now DFG isn't a part of the state government? You can't use a passport, either.

Who issues those documents, if it isn't the government?
