Not sure if this is the correct sub-forum, but here goes.
I took the Sniper I course offered by Ares Armor Tactical Training a few week back. I took out a stock Remington 700 SPS Tactical (.308) with a redfield revenge hunter 4-12x(not a great decision on the optic), 250 rounds of m80(yes machine gun ammo, not the best choice
), and lots of other stuff. At the time I had never taken any shooting class before and had only shot the gun once before(on new year's day) so I'm fairly inexperienced.
On the first day, we were taught some basic things, bolt manipulation, breathing, cleaning, etc. and shot out to 100yd. I will say my performance was not the best but after having my scope zeroed properly I was shooting 1.5-2" groups. The second day we learned a ton more, calculating windage and elevation, some basic cold bore theory, etc. We went out, were paired up, and worked our way up from 100yd to 300 yd. Day 3, we had very little "classroom" time but went over ammo selection and internal ballistics. Headed out to the range, did 100 yd grouping drills and eventually worked out all the way to 700(with the option of going all the way to 900). We then came back, cleaned up, received our certificates of completion, and headed home
Over those three days, I learned a ton about my rifle. Even though I didn't have a "tactical" type scope or match grade ammo, I have improved as a shooter. I would definitely recommend these guys.
Hopefully one day, after a new scope, better ammo, and more practice, I can afford to take the sniper II course!
