Lost ammo - police report necessary?

    Hi everybody,

I need some advice - I lost a few boxes of shotgun and .22LR ammo.

Do I need to file a police report?

The sporting goods store that I purchased the ammo advised me that I do NOT have to, but I thought I'd get a second (third, fourth, etc) opinion.

    Thanks in advance!

No, no report necessary. Out of curiosity, what does "lost" mean to you?

    Stolen, misplaced, or other?

Misplaced by me. Lost some shotgun shells - I think I might have dropped them around my garage, but not sure, and none of my neighbors have reported it, my landlord and maintenance guy haven't found anything either.

        Thanks

From a purely practical standpoint, there are no serial numbers or other way for that ammo to be traced to you.

So, call the non-emergency number of your pd or sheriff's office and ask?

I'm trying to wrap my head around your question. Are you thinking of reporting it in the hopes to recover the ammo?

+1. How much ammo did you misplaced?

Never, as in do not EVER invite the police into any situation like this. NOTHING good can come of it. There is NO requirement, legally or ethically, to report this.

                        Leave it at that.

Yes, if you want to be laughed at by the police.

Holy **** that is good advice.

Seriously, is someone near death? Is your house on fire?

Think twice before you invite LE or the government in general to come handle your business.

You may not like their decisions, and there is no turning back once they get involved.
