    Nevada Law

Hello all. I am new to the board and was wondering if anyone can help answer a question. I recently emailed a couple of Nevada gun stores and asked about the availability and pricing on some high capacity magazines. One of the stores emailed a response and asked if I had a Nevada Driver's License and did not answer my questions. My question now is does Nevada law require a Nevada Driver's License to purchase high capacity magazines?

Welcome to CalGuns and be prepared for a bunch of people to nail you with 'use the search button' comments. I don't live in CA, so take what I say with care. Don't do anything below unless you've checked to make sure you'll not be at risk of arrest.

Some NV dealers are intimidated by CA LE into not doing business with CA residents. If you walked into a NV gun store with cash and bought 30 round mags without talking about where you're from, there'd be no problem. If you mention you're from CA, dealers will get nervous that the PRK gov will decide they should be charged under some kind of 'conspiracy' to subvert CA gun control and get the evil hi-cap mags into the PRK.

From what I've read here, CA does allow disassembled magazines of greater than 10 round capacity. So, go to a store the next time you're in NV, don't talk about where you're from, pay cash, shoot to your heart's content--then disassemble them and return to the workers' paradise.

Don't take my word on CA law though, I don't have to deal with it except when I visit--and I'm careful about that. Too many stories.
People don't like to be meddled with. We tell them what to do, what to think, don't run, don't walk. We're in their homes and in their heads and we haven't the right. We're meddlesome.

Thanks for the quick response VegasND. For some reason those search engines do not work very well for me. I always seem to type in the wrong wording and I'm too impatient at times to try it over and over. Good to know there are some nice people on this board.

The gun stores I have been in Nevada, never asked me for any I.D. to buy magazines.

Let's just put it this way; High-cap mags sprout up like weeds around these here parts. Just remember, "manufaturing" or importing a high-cap mag in CA is a big no no if you're a CA resident.

Are you a California resident and are you in California when you're attempting to purchase large-capacity magazines?

Why are you trying to break the law? Assuming you're a Californian.

Since when is it illegal to purchase magazine rebuild kits??

As long as he doesn't assemble them into full mags (or if he does and destroys his previously owned std. cap mags) he's 100% legal.

Try going to stores off the strip. "The Gun Store" will not sell hicaps without a license.... Go further out or even up to Utah (not too far away) and it shouldn't be a problem.

Another thing that used to be possible is to obtain a "NV Temporary Resident" ID card, all you need is an address where you stay (DONT LIE on the forms!) a couple weeks out of the year. I believe they require 30 or 90 days out of every calendar year to get the Temp. Resident ID card. I used to have one a couple years ago. I only used it to get good deals at casinos, etc but you can also use it to buy magazine parts, etc at gun stores. IIRC you can even buy weapons with one, but you couldn't import those weapons back to CALI legally w/out going thru an FFL (you can store them in NV tho)

You can also buy ammo/mags/parts from private sellers...they actually run "for sale" ads in newspapers in free amerika still, keep that in mind My cousin used to live in NV and he said it was common for people to buy/sell/trade guns face to face from newspaper ads. Do your own research on this one, but DO NOT BRING THEM INTO CALIFORNIA if you do buy one.

Your SAFEST bet is to buy the kits, break them down and MAIL THEM HOME in 2 seperate packages. This way there is NO WAY you can be pulled over at the border and have "hicaps" in your possession (its been known to happen after gun shows in Reno and Vegas)

                Have fun, and stay legal.

Yah yer right... Im just so used to people getting rebuild kits I assumed that was his intention.

Either way its not illegal to buy a "hicap" mag in another state as long as you dont bring it here after you do

I was only trying to get a price and see if the store carried them for a specific model. I was checking this board to see if there was a law that a Nevada DL was required to purchase high capacity magazines because of the gun store's email. I did not try to buy anything and am not going to break the law.

Just so it's clear: A California resident can't purchase large capacity magazines while in California. A California resident can purchase large capacity magazines when out of state but can not import a large capacity magazine. Some California residents buy large capacity magazines out of state, disassemble them, and return to use those parts to repair existing large capacity magazines which is legal.

Mr. Hoffman is correct, but dealers in Reno and LV routinely request DL's now when individuals unknown to them attempt to purchase highcaps.

The fact that buying the mags to use as parts is completely legal doesn't mean that the dealers are obliged to sell you what you're looking for.
