It made national news that they were going to make "peace bricks" out of those 750 buyback guns, but they had long since been disposed of when they made the announcement. Were they just going to lie and say the plates were made from those guns?

Mayor's office says they knew that they had already been destroyed and they decided to go ahead with the press conference announcement and just use guns melted down from future buybacks. Not mentioning that no guns to use as a source currently exist. Sounds like damage control.

that is so ****ing awesome. Pardon my curse words but it is literally ushering in a new collector item status and i love the idea that firearms turned in anon to these buy backs are basically given "clean bills of health" and repatriated to the law abiding citizens.

Hope this isn't hijacking the thread, this sure as hell demonstrates the difference between AZ and WA states. Peace brick my arse....
Jan Brewer signed it into law. Gotta love Arizona. Especially compared to what we have to deal with here. Of course, the liberal asshat who wrote this article calls the buybacks "pointless" due to this law. Which is stupid beyond belief to even say, because the bill requires that the guns be sold to Federally licensed gun dealers, not taken to a high crime area and thrown out the back of a police car. The buybacks are pointless to begin with but at least this way the guns don't get melted down into bricks for the hippies to stare at.

Arizona law bans destroying guns purchased in buyback programs

Ariz. Gov. Jan Brewer has signed legislation that prohibits cities and counties from destroying any guns that come into their possession -- part of a broader movement to limit gun buybacks.

TUCSON — City- or county-sponsored gun buybacks — often used in larger cities to entice people to give up their handguns — have become effectively pointless in Arizona with legislation signed by Gov. Jan Brewer.

The bill prohibits cities and counties from destroying any guns that come into their possession; instead, the firearms must now be sold to federally licensed dealers.

The law started out as a set of guidelines on how government agencies should handle property that was confiscated, used as evidence, or turned in to law enforcement agencies, with an eye toward generating money for strapped programs. Eventually, the provision preventing local government from destroying such weapons was added.

Brewer’s office did not issue a statement about her approval of House of Representatives Bill 2455, which she signed without fanfare Monday.
