Shipping a gun out of state

Need some help/advice on how to send a gun to an out-of-state relative. About a year and a half ago, my relative moved to the other coast, and I stored his gun in my safe, as he was unsure about gun laws over there. No change of legal possession took place - the gun is still registered to him (AFAIK). So my question is - what is the best way to send it to him? Can I simply mail it like any other non-firearm package? Do I have to go through an FFL? It is a firearm, after all, despite it still being owned by him. Should I take it apart and mail it in pieces?

    Any help appreciated.
    "Two dead?!? HOW?!?"
[sigh] "Bullets, mortar fire, heavy artillery salvos, terminal syphilis, bad luck --- the usual things, Captain."

Leaving a gun with you in CA, and then leaving CA for elsewhere, looks like a transfer from relative to you.

CA might complain about a transfer without benefit of FFL.

Now that the gun needs to go from CA to someone out of state, that looks like an interstate transfer, and the Feds require that you would send the gun to an FFL in the state of residence of the receiver.

BTW, this is by no means an 'off topic' forum thread - moved to General Gun Discussions.
