Just want to shoot....

It's been many many years since my friends and I just lit out and went out to the country just to shoot. I'd like to know if it's still legal in Ca. to do this. If it is do I need any special permissions from anyone in order to shoot my .45 and my 12 gauge? Also, living in the SF Bay Area just how far will I have to travel to be able to find a safe shooting area. More or less I'm just looking for a different place to shoot other than the indoor range that's close to home. If there's anyone on this forum from my area and has knowledge of a place to shoot in general or can answer any of these questions it would be appreciated.

Plenty of BLM or National Forest land you can shoot on 60-120 minutes outside the Bay Area. You do not need anyone's permission as long as you respect the law (some zones, even on BLM or NF land are restricted) and follow basic safety rules.

You also need to educate yourself with the law when it comes to transporting your firearms - basically, keep them unloaded, handguns in locked containers, and rifles in locked cases (because you will undoubtedly go through school zones).

Any plans I would have to shoot outside my area would definitely include knowledge of Calif. gun laws (especially the travelling with guns laws) and of course our basic gun safety rules which goes without saying but I'll say it anyway because we all can use the reminder. Also I plan to leave any site I shoot at in the same condition it was in when I got there as when I leave. The last thing I want to do is mess things up for the next guy (or girl) that wants to do the same thing. One question tho, what is BLM? Thanks for the replies.
