I am trying to summarize most basic firearms related regulations in place and coming soon. As far as I know it is very easy to miss some important regulations in California for a novice person like me just because of complexity of legislative restrictions and limitations and ongoing changes in the legislation. I read about cases when even people with legal background coming from other states got into trouble because the person was not aware of one or another of local regulations. I will appreciate any feedback if anything is missing or incorrect.
1. handguns are registered at the time of transfer by the officially registered FFL. I guess it means that no further actions are required on my part upon completion of the handgun transfer.
2. long guns are not registered through the transfer and their registration is not required as of today. Long gun registration will become mandatory starting Jan 1, 2014. New restrictions to come are described here
3. AR-15 and AK are considered assault rifles and their registration ended in 2000. Here is the official site with information
4. AR15 and not banned AK style rifles with bullet buttons are not considered assault rifles in California as of today. These are long guns (not assault weapon) according to the current definition of AW. This part is the most complicated to me. There are lots of discussions about AR-15 assault rifles. Is it correct to assume that except for items banned on the DOJ list AR-15 based and AK based rifles with bullet buttons or with no features defined for assault rifles are not considered assault rifles?
5. Firearms regulations and restrictions are available on the following official websites
are there any other official websites with the relevant information?
6. Hunting shotguns must be limited to 3 rounds maximum in hunting areas. There are no restrictions for rifles and handguns/revolvers besides maximum 10 round capacity of magazines in hunting areas.
