You would need to meet the US export/import requirements and the import and export requirements of the other country.
The US will generally let you exit and return with your own personal weapon if you have original documents showing purchase/ownership of it within the US, or take it to Customs before you leave to get a stamped registration form w/ serial number of the gun showing ownership within the US.
Permanently exporting or reexporting a firearm, other than a shotgun with an 18"+ barrel from the US requires a license from the State Dept. Office of Defense Trade Controls. Permanantly exporting or reexporting a shotgun with an 18"+ barrel to most countries requires a license from the U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of Industry and Security. The above does not constitute legal advice. I am not your lawyer.

It's easier to get approval to ship something out than bringing it back.
During the 90s, some friends of mine got contracted for a security detail in South Africa. They got State Departement & South African government approval to take a bunch of AR15s & USPs with them. After their job, they had to sell everything they brought in South Africa because the State Department would not allow them to bring it back to the USA.sigpic

I went through the hassle of getting an export license for an AR receiver back in the 80's to send a receiver to Australia. This was when we could buy receivers at the Cow Palace gun show and rifles had no waiting periods. Anyway, the Dept. of State controls export of firearms and munitions.
To export, you need to get a license and pay a hefty fee and register as an arms exporter, but since I was doing this one time, I got a free one-time license. I don't know if they still have this free one-time license. Usually, if the firearm is not going to a country hostile to the US, i.e. North Korea, and the firearm isn't a military weapon, M16-A2, then you'll very likely get an approval. The US doesn't care if you export a firearm as long as it's not likely to end up being used against Americans.
The real problem is getting an import permisson from the destination country. Many countries don't like firearms like AR-15, M1A, FAL, etc. coming into their borders; I don't know why
