I believe if he sends them to you disassembled as "parts kits" and you never assemble/use them in the state of California, it is legal.

You can never use them in normal configuation here in Kalifornistan. You can receive them (make darn sure dad takes them apart before shipping) as parts kits to rebuild or modify to 10 rounders. Or you can assemble them OUT OF STATE when you visit Dad etc...Never travel with them assembled in California. Tell dad you want AMMO...hehehe.

            NOPE!

You can't import, transfer (sell or give), or manufacture magazines that hold more than 10 rounds in California.

Well that clears up the question.
Maybe a nice t-shirt would be more appropriate, is it legal to ship a politically incorrect t-shirt across state lines

no, that's illegal too, leave the t shirt at home. but if you're here illegally, you can have the state pay for your education.

Use the parts to rebuild the 2 he sent you last year ;-) If they are metal there's probably no date - if Magpuls they weren't around before the ban so they'll always have to be blocked to 10.
