Shotgun transfer help....

Hello, first post here. I tried my best to find the right section for this question, so if this in the wrong area, please let me know. Looking for some advice on a shotgun transfer.

My brother is currently a resident of CA. I am a resident of another state. Not that it matters in this case, but I grew up in CA . I am building a Remington 870 for him and I want to give it to him as a gift. He will be visiting me this summer (out of CA), and I want to surprise him with it.

Looking for advice on the best way to get this thing legally transferred to him after he returns to CA. I assume it has to be shipped to an FFL down there and they can do the transfer, but I am not sure. So if anyone can give me some advice on the best way to handle it or point me to the correct information, I would truly appreciate it.

Yes, it has to be transfered to him through a California FFL.

Some FFLs will accept the shipment directly from you while others will only accept it if you have an FFL ship it on your end. Some FFLs will charge $50 to do the transfer while others will charge $200. Some won't even do out of state transfers. So you need to find an FFL local to your brother who will accept the transfer for the cheapest price. If you post the general area that your brother lives in, maybe another Calgunner will know of a good FFL that's close.

Send it to his FFL with a note saying that it's a gift, so he doesn't pay tax. Make sure the FFL will accept from a private party if that's what you intend to do

Thanks for the info guys.....he is around the fountain valley/westminster/huntington beach area.

He is just recently getting into guns and has only done 2 purchases from stores. He hasnt done any private party transfers or any out of state buying, so he doesnt have a FFL per se. So yeah, if anyone has any recommendations, on a good FFL, that would also be greatly appreciated.
