Went to pop a replacement bolt into one of the work rifles to test out. I go to remove the barrel... and I couldn't get the stupid thing off!

So I wiggle, twist, and whack away at it with a rubber mallet. No avail. I'm thinking, sheesh, I must be incredibly retarded or something. So I take the damn thing to one of the engineers... and he can't get it off either!

The eventual diagnosis was that, after the thousands upon thousands of rounds put through that rifle, the metal of the gas tube had expanded somehow; just enough to wedge in really tight where it hooks up with the barrel. We ended up having to vise it down and hammer the barrel off with a metal hammer.

I replaced the gas tube. Thankfully I wasn't the retard I thought I was. Those M96s are a whole new world compared the the XCR, I tell ya.

Same here. I may have to trade mine in if she doesn't get with it. I'm not kidding either.

Ok now that the love fest is over...

Which rifle were you working on? I can't tell if you are talking about the XCR or M96. Do you think this is a defect in the design?

Last sentence of her post seems to indicate that she was working on a M96 and that it was different than working on a XCR.

                        Yeah, it was an M96.

It's the test rifle... it's had at the very least 30000 rds through it... probably a lot more. It's been our test gun for years and years. Every single R&D project we ever looked into was tested on that baby

Not really a defect in the design. The metal on the gas tube just expanded a little... enough to cause a sticky situation.

At least it wasn't like the older models where if the barrel wasn't on right it could blow off!

And before you ask, yes, that was one of the recalls on early M96's.
