What is the markup on firearms?

I recently left behind my old hobby of guitars(I have no musical skills at all) and have resurged my old gun hobby. That is what led me to this great forum.

It is pretty much a known that dealer cost on guitars is 50% of MSRP. With discount of 30-40% being common if you have a good relationship with a dealer.

So here again is another question, what is the dealer cost of guns? It's probably pretty standard across the industry, but those of you who work have worked or have a FFL what are the cost?

With publications like SGN listing wholesale prices, many dealers have a hard time getting more than 10-15% over wholesale. Even then some customers complain and think that they should only have to pay wholesale prices because they see them advertised.

We used to use the rule of 15% or $50; which ever was higher.

Speaking to a few dealers over time, it's manufacturer dependent. For instance S&W has a high markup and dealers have wiggle room to offer deals, CZ has a low markup and you don't find "screaming deals" much if at all.

Between 7% and 15% is common.

Until you get to some stores which try to sell a certain FN pistol for $300 more than the normal markup.
