    Tobacco

my father was a heavy Cigar and cigarette smoker. and his guns stank of it, the wood stocks and cases and so on, just horrible, I'm got the guns cleaned and some still have the slight smell, but the cases most I have thrown out, but the leather holsters I'm holding cause I'm curious if there is a way to knock out that smell.

Any ideas? so I can stop getting hit with that rank everytime I open my safe.
Got my Utah CCW, Thanks JimAmentler!

Have you tried leaving them in an open air area for a while? I had a book I borrowed once from a heavy smoker - I had to leave it in the garage (it was safe and dry) for about a month before it stopped reeking.

I'd also call up one of those leather places that specializes in cowboy boots and such - I'm sure they deal with that question from time to time. I doubt you can get it out completely, but there are probably a number of ways to minimize the smell.

Maybe scrub them up with saddle soap? I know what you mean though, I bought a set of grips from a guy once and could hardly stand the smell until I used about a half a can of lemon pledge on them. Thank god I gave up that habit, and to this day I apologize regularly to my wife for making her smell that crap for all those years.

        For the leather, Frebreeze.

No, really, it works great on stinky motorcycle leathers.
Yeah, back in the Ranching days, they called me spoon.

I'm approaching my one year cigarette smoking quitting anniversary(patch for 4 days, then cold turkey) this April 29th. All I can say is, that the tabacco smell eventually goes away.

This website really helped motivate me to quit if anyone's interested: http://www.whyquit.org

          Best.

i have stopped smoking three times.. 1 month, 4 months and then the last time was almost a whole year. i did it cold each time. People just don't understand how hard it is to quit. that was a great site and i will try my fourth attemp very soon. How about posting a speacial thread about "how to stop smoking from a x-smoker" in the off topic.

I stop smoking when I need ammo for an up coming shoot.

A wood cleaner should get the smell out.

Start smoking at least a pack a day, after a little bit you won't be able to smell the smoke in other items unless it is REALLY strong.

Good luck, I started smoking when I was 16(I'm 34 now) and I just got tired of being nicotine's bitch. Paying taxes on packs of smokes. Clerks taking pleasure watching me jones for cigs and spending my last couple of bucks and some change on the effing things. People have offered me smokes, blew it in my face, said, "just this once."...and I didn't smoke, I'm done. It's lost it's appeal to me years ago, putting tar and poison into the lungs that give me life, it didn't make even more no sense to me now.

Yeah, I felt like arse, and my brain and moods were all over the place from the nicotine withdrawal, but I just accepted that sometimes in life you feel like sheet and you don't alway's have to be doped up to cope.

Plus, I got a lot to live for, 30 year old wife, 14 year old son, possible future grandkids....being a singer in a rock band you also want your voice to top performance levels to lay waste to wankers everywhere.

(I'm not in a band anymore, but some of my music is here: http://www.myspace.com/seektherapy )

If you can go 3-4 days without a smoke, after that it's all in your head. Good job.

Stanze- that's exactly what did it for me, I read that the nicotine is out of your system in 3 days. I just told myself if I could survive for three days then it was all in my mind and I made it a game of will. I locked myself away for a three day weekend and from then on I told myself "It's all in your mind, and you own your mind". I worked at it for about a month and then it became pretty easy, I now get a craving about once every year or two and it's really kind of funny as it just kind of hit's you and you say "where did that come from". Indeed one of the best things I've ever done and it is great to be truly free.

                              Hello all.

I am new to the forum, quietly lurking in the background, trying to learn as much as I can before buying a gun, as a cigar smoker ( only outside, or in the garage ) I use baking soda to get rid of the smell of tobacco, it works most of the time.

                              Hope this helps.

                              Regards
