    here is a 3/8" plate with 1000's of .223,5.56 (steel core),.308 ranging from 100-200 yards. (its been repainted twice)

    The pitting I think was from the .308... but .223 and 5.56 just leave marks.
    I dont think the .308 would have left pits but a couple times while it was out it fell off the swing stand and stayed upright...so we kept shooting it.

      I have a 3/8" AR500 plate. Shot 30-06 M2 ball and 556 green tip at 50 yards and it hardly dimples the surface.
      Urban legends are a poor basis for making public policy.
