Ive never purchased a gun from a private party before but am interested because of the great deals i keep finding here. I see a lot of people doing ppt /ftf only could someone explain? do they get to avoid some fees and only pay for dros? thanks for any replies i tried searching but keep getting distracted by other threads.

Private Party Transaction (ppt) is a legal transfer from one person to another. Face to face (ftf) is just a term thrown out that the seller will meet with the buyer at the FFL. No fee's are avoided, as this is a legal way to transfer ownership in any firearm.

State law mandates that a dealer can only charge $35 for a private party transfer with both parties present. This is done to encourage people to use the system rather than sell off the books due to outrageous transfer costs. You can also transfer curio and relic (50+ years old) long guns face to face with no paperwork.

aww finally some clarity! my ffl only charges 5-10 bucks per transaction so i guess i would save 20-30 bucks from a gun shop..good news for me bad news for the wife, now on to the classifieds thread thanks
