Renew in person. The renewal paperwork should work, but it depends on the FFL. While you're there, spend a few bucks and get your DMV printout as a backup. Your W2 will likely NOT work, as it is not a government issued document.

It might not be a bad idea to contact your FFL ahead of time to confirm that they will accept these documents. They should, but some have gotten a little screwy lately.

I don't want to do this because they will probably screw me but it's my own fault.

Will the lease agreement help?

My experience is that many FFLs tend to err on the side of caution, hence my recommendation to check with them first. Some will take a lease agreement, some will not. The DMV printout I suggested is a solid bet.

Nobody said you had to identify yourself when you inquire about what they will take. Call and tell them that you are interested in purchasing a rifle, explain your situation and ask what they will accept. It happens more often than you may think.

DMV will not give you a new I'd card on the spot. It has to be mailed to you. They will print you something that shows you have a valid driver's license but that is not an ID. FFLs can accept your driving record printout and if they try to turn you down for that, ask them for BATFE phone number and call while standing in the shop. Once you get clarification (if you can get through), take your rifle home and take your business elsewhere.
