    bad to store loaded magazines

Is it bad to store loaded magazines long term? Can the spring wear out prematurely?

    No.

Metal springs wear out from use - cycles of compression/expansion. A normal spring can remain compressed for decades without deterioration.

Isn't this under the dead horse thread ? Along with slide fire transporting gear to the range price gouging in the market place and EVERY thread that starts with "is this legal......"

It's bad to store them unloaded. An unloaded gun is just an awkward club. All my mags are stored loaded.

Not really. I usually keep my new mags loaded as to hopefully help break in the springs. Not sure if it really helps but it seems to do so. I don't think it will do any harm. As most have stated, it is the constant use (compression/depression is what wears them).

When you park your car do you jack it up to take the load off the springs so they don't wear out?

And if/when your magazine springs do wear out, it's easy to replace them. I just replaced the magazine springs for my Ruger P89 - they were over 20 years old!

I stored two of those 30 round glock mags fully loaded for a year and the springs have lost their tension and will not load rounds properly. So I believe you can.
