Get a one piece cleaning rod. Dewey rods are great. Use a brush and a jag. Buy patches in bulk not the little packs. Use wipe-out or one of the other foaming cleaners. Use hoppies if you like the smell. If you want the gun clean then use one of the many better ones on the market. Sweets7.62/shooters choice/tetra-gun/butches bore shine/Barnes cr-10/Montanna stuff/ etc are all good. Tetra-gun/G96/inhibitor,tri-flow,kroil etc all make good oil. Tetra-gun/rigs/are good grease. A bore guide is good.
These are a short list of brands.

Most kits have a jointed cleaning rod and that is just plain bad. Plus the other stuff is usually not so great either. Best to assemble your own "kit" that meets your needs for your firearms.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

OP, unless you are asking for your multi$$$$$ benchrest rifle, then any kit from any store will work just fine.

Cheap cleaning kit from Wally-World and cheap cleaning patches also from Wally-World.

Break Free CLP because it's cheaper than all the other stuff on the market, also from Wally-World.

For my lg. caliber guns i use an H&K cleaning kit which consists of a chain with a patch holder and the ability to screw a bore brush onto it, just drop the chain down the bore and pull it through. Use chemicals of your choice.

I have Otis pull through kits for quickie cleaning at the range and in my bug out bag but I use Tipton one-piece cleaning rods from MidwayUSA with Lucas bore guides in my rifles. None of them have ever seen a cheap Walmart kit and never will. For chemicals I use M-Pro 7 bore gel for the bore and Breakfree CLP for cleaning the rest and for rust prevention.

I just used a Tipton rod/bore guide on my AR for the first time and ended up ordering 3 more to cover all my guns except the 870. I take an Otis universal kit and bore snakes for all my long guns to the desert with me. Hoppes #9, CLP Break free, and Rem oil are all GTG too.

over the years i've 'accumulated' my own version of a cleaning kit that is put together based on my needs as i perceive them to be. i've found that the 'box' that i put my stuff in is the most important item to obtain in beginning a cleaning kit that will become customized to my wants and needs. a good sized box encourages creative thought, rather than inhibits it. as i see it, it's better to grow into a kit than to grow out of it. for my primary home cleaning kit i use an older, very large obsolete UMCO fishing tackle box that has 8 foldout trays with many different sized compartments within those trays. underneath all this is plenty of storage room for larger items that won't fit anywhere else; bottles/cans of cleaning agents, lubricants, rags and tools.

i buy individual rods, brushes, mops and other odds-n-ends that i choose, rather than a pre-selected grouping of items. i integrate items that were originally manufactured for purposes unrelated to guns with items that were specifically made for gun cleaning; having a large box for storage of cleaning items allows me to put what i want into my kit without inhibition. i prefer one-piece rods for cleaning, and like Dewey and Tipton products for same; i use Dewey rods for most of my cleaning needs. not all one piece rods are going to fit into your cleaning box, so you'll need another place to store some of your stuff.

you can buy a pre-made cleaning kit, and as others will tell you... it will get the job done. i won't tell you not to do this; just sharing my preference and what works for me.

I started out with just a bore snake and Break-Free CLP. I got a little Otis cleaning kit later, as it had chamber brushes and stuff. Paper towels and Q-tips work OK most everywhere else.

Personally though, I'd recommend getting non-toxic oils/solvents. I really hate using CLP as it will probably lead me to an early grave. I've heard Hoppes is also toxic (though not as bad as CLP).

Get a nylon gun brush a small box of q-tips and a bottle of frog lube. You will also need a bore snake for each caliber some overlap and if you get the rifle ones you can use in same caliber on pistols as well. A cheap hair drier would also be nice to heat up parts before applying frog lube.
