I recently bought a AR Bushmaster and I am new to the AR platform and have questions about the ammo, I thought all 5.56 and .223 were the same ammo is this correct? and I thought the AR I just bought was a .223 5.56 but it states its a 5.56 X 45 now is this the same as .223 or what, can this be shot in a ar thats 223 and can the oppisite work? Can .223 be shot in my Ar thats a 5.56 X 45? This ammo has always been confusing, any help would be appreciated thanks alot - Barginhunter- -

Need help with questions on my AR & Ammo

5.56 and .223 are not the same rounds. While the dimensions of the round are almost identical, 5.56 shoots at a much higher pressure than 223.
So a rifle chambered in 5.56 can shoot 223, but a 223 rifle cannot (safely) shoot 5.56 due to the higher pressure.
Your barrel should be stamped with either .223 or 5.56 -
Its stamped 5.56 Nato, so I can shoot .223 out of mine?Comment
