    A "Willed" Handgun

    Hey everyone!

Have a quick question. My best friend was willed a Ruger .44 magnum Redhawk 10 years ago. Up until last week, he never considered shooting it but now he wants to take it to the range.

Clearly because the original owner passed, how does a "transfer" take place at this point?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

As the beneficiary of a deceased, he should have filed the OPLAW form - http://oag.ca.gov/sites/all/files/pd...rms/oplaw.pdf?

He should get his HSC - handgun safety certificate - and file that form.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

Or the Ruger can remain one of the millions of legal unregistered handguns in California. No requirement that all handguns be registered.

      Of course Librarian is correct.

Do you think there will be penalties or legal repercussions due to the amount of time that has lapsed since the actual hand off?

@cannon: Yes, that was an option he considered, but he decided in the end to stay on the right side of the law and register his handgun.

There is no penalty to reporting the transfer after the mandated time period has elapsed.

On the form it does ask you when did you take possesion of the firearm?
I think you are supposed to register it within 30. I just went through this with a pistol my dad left me. There is a penalty , however I have never heard of it enforced. I think DOJ is just happy that people actually report it. I would just put down the date you send the form in as the date you took possesion.
