Why a "Reasonable Conversation" Is NOT POSSIBLE.

There are many topics which can be discussed and reasonable compromises arranged. As I watch the live stream of the Colorado Senate on House Bill 1224 banning "high capacity magazines", its clear to me that gun control is not one of them.

A state senator is discussing how there needs to be reasonable discussion on the balance of civil liberties vs Constitutional rights, thus his support for more gun control. I submit there is no room for compromise, any more then there can be a middle ground between Hamas and the Israeli Parliament, or the space between one side of a coin or the other. When the quarter hits the table you have two sides to pick from, and when it comes to gun control there are the same number of options.

Either you agree that individuals have the right to defend themselves and to keep and bear arms , a right not subject to the regulation of the government.

Or you believe that citizens, ultimately, should be collectively disarmed except select agents of the State. One philosophy cannot exist at the same time as the other, and those who insist it can are as foolish as those who believe today that the Earth is the center of the universe.

I don't ask you to pick the side of the Constitution. We all have the right to believe as we see fit as Americans. I simply ask that you pick a side, and do so honestly.
The more prohibitions you have, the less virtuous people will be.
The more subsidies you have, the less self reliant people will be.

Yes, gun control bears and eerie resemblance to the abortion debate.

Those against them don't have one, never had one, don't plan on getting one, and are dead set on making sure you can't either.

Whereas those in favor merely see it as choice and a right, and have no designs to keep the choice from anyone else, rather merely wish to maintain the freedom for themselves and their families in the event they feel they want one.

ST, I agree! I like the people that will shoot a gun, but not own one. Like someone stated the Starburst "walking contradiction" No need to argue IMO, they're not worth it.
Yes I took the pic, no I didn't go swimming!

Abortion is only similar in the fact that emotion is involved.

You have to understand that it's the mission of the gun-control lobby to achieve total ban of all firearms. They're doing it piecemeal because that's the only way it can realistically be accomplished with low-information America.

reasonable conversation is possible - if it's something that will make them pull the floor out from underneath themselves.

although i'm pretty tired of the simple minded 2 sided debates i hear about this stuff in the news though. mostly on the anti side from a bunch of people whose jobs and merit depend on being able to speak well, suck up, make people happy doing things that are seemingly beneficial, and/or give an appearance of being able to do the above. not people who actually know how things really work on a deeper level. it absolutely dumbfounds me that these people think a gun is complex enough to ban... if we can make cars, we can sure as hell make guns. as a matter of fact, im a little surprised they aren't nearing antiquated relic status yet (similar to swords, axes, etc.).
