Because of the "unsafe handgun" laws.
Starting 01-01-2007, any semi-auto centerfire pistol that is submitted to be placed on the Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale must have a "chamber load indicator" and a "magazine disconnect mechanism". [PC 32010(d)(2)]
Unknown ETA on when S&W will start production of the CA compliant M&P Shield series. Suppose to be sometime this year, before the summer.sigpic

The CA version should be shipping next month (hopefully), according to S&W. Nobody seems to have the parts to sell the non-compliant version via Single Shot Exemption, so the CA version seems the logical choice for most folks...

Um... there are shops that have the parts to do the SSE conversions. They are having a harder time getting the actual Shields.Comment

As said above, Shields are hard to find everywhere. In Virginia, they're going for up to $600 on the used market.Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

1. make money (does a gun suddenly become unsafe after a manufacturer stops submitting the gun?)
