I absolutely LOVE My XD40 Service model. I have over 2000 rounds down range, and I have NEVER shot a more accurate pistol. The round is easy to manage, and for me at least, very quick to get back on target. It's a snap (get it ) to reload the round, and not very expensive. I highly recommend the .40 round for anybody.

Do NOT by the 40. It's horrible, inaccurate and costs WAY too much. As a public service, I'd be willing to help you dispose of any surplus ammo though and will even let you buy me lunch to come get it.

I used to be a big fan of the .40 carried the round on duty wtih two different guns. Then about a year ago I did some shooting into some turtles out of a pond that were eating all the fish.

.40 were leaving little holes showing that they went in but I wasn't seeing anything tht great. Hitting the turtle with a .45 round the shell of the turtle was cracking and blood was going into the air about 6 inches when it hit.

I did some more testing with other objects and just found that the .40 that I had loved did a okay job with objects but the .45 round left alot of evidence and destory things.

After this I got rid of all my .40's and went to .45's. I hope never to have to shoot at somebody again in my life, but if I am in ever in that position again I wanna be able to take that threat out with visible quick results to end the threat quickly.

                I would advise against .40's

                  Excessive recoil.

9mm & 45 cal. have less and are just as good.

Excessive recoil ... Maybe if you have limp noodles for wrists.

I don't know about excessive recoil. My 5'2" 110 pound daughters think its a blast to shoot. I guess they're just "man enough"

How is the .40 cal considered "unpopular"? Isn't it now the most widely used LE cartridge?

The .40 cal has the most recoil snap of the three (9mm, .40, .45). You haven't shot a G17, G22, and G21 side-by-side if you claim the .40 doesn't feel any different. It's just a fact that the muzzle will rise quicker with the .40 cal. With that said, it's completely manageable. Just different. There are guys that say the .40 cal is impractical for quick follow-up shots. Simply hasn't been my experience. I think it's a good balance between capacity and size. I don't measure my life-saving equipment by cents-per-round, so the cost of the bullet is largely irrelevant to me.

I think it depends on the gun. My m&p 40c handles the 40 recoil extremely well and its a blast to shoot. My gf even loves my m&p. The recoil isn't bad like my buddys XD. Here, 40 is significantly cheaper than 45acp. It is much closer to the cost of 9mm. I just purchased 200 factory new 40s&w rounds for 75 out the door. 45 ACP a bit over 50 cents a round; 50 rounds for 26.99 or so.

I like the capacity of the 40 and a big selling point to me is the fact that many guns made in 40 are also made in 9mm. I can easily swap a 9mm barrel and mags into my m&p 40c to shoot 9mm.

I also have an m&p 40 shield. I picked it up a week ago and find that the recoil of my shield is very similar to my dads ruger lc9. Size is almost the same, with the lc9 bring a bit smaller. Smith and Wesson sold me on 40 because I've never shot a compact with so little recoil.
