the El Monte police took away over 30 pistols and a couple of shot guns from somebody i loosely know. he is mental and i have no problem the police taking them. what i do have a problem with is this guy was willing to give all of them to a good friend who is a stable person and they said no. sad to see these fine guns go to the scraper. i guess nothing can stop them. one is a 308 rifle that cost over 2,000 bucks 10 years ago.what a waste.

It isn't as easy as you think 'giving' guns to someone. Very costly and time consuming. It might have been less expensive if the Guy with the mental problems had an adult child or a mom or dad to transfer guns to. Either way, for handguns it would cost money. This transfer or sale should have happened LONG AGO. Waiting cost the man his collection.
The Police had no choice. I wish the man well and hope he gets the medical help he needs.
As a side note: we don't need more gun problems from people with mental illness. JMO.May the Bridges I burn light the way.

Fewer people are killed with all rifles each year (323 in 2011) than with shotguns (356), hammers and clubs (496), and hands and feet (728). -
WHAT? The Police do not get to decide these matters. This is something a court has jurisdiction over. Police cannot seize property and dictate its disposition. You are either missing a huge part of the story...as in a long court case with court order... or the El Monte PD never told them that.
The owner has rights even if mentally ill. The value of the property being one and a case of recovery from the illness is the other.Comment

The posts that suggest these confiscations are always done in accordance with due process
must have forgotten about New Orleans and Katrina and the associated pillage of legal firearms from normal, regular folks.
